Joe Montana became the Super Bowl's third two-time most valuable player, joining Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw. Montana led the 49ers to their second Super Bowl championship in three years, a 38-16 victory over Miami. He passed for a Super Bowl-record 331 yards, completing 24-of-35 passes. Three of those completions were for touchdowns, and Montana scored 1 rushing touchdown.

The second quarter was the turning point for the 49ers. Trailing 10-7 after the first quarter (the 49ers' score came on an 33-yard pass from Montana to running back Monroe), San Francisco put together three scoring drives in the second quarter. At the end of the first drive, Montana threw an 8-yard pass to running back Roger Craig to retake the lead.

A few minutes later, Montana scored on a 6-yard run. For the game, Montana rushed 5 times for 59 yards. A 2-yard rushing score by Craig completed the 49ers' turnaround

quarter. In the second half, Montana kept the San Francisco offense humming, driving for a field goal and throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to Craig in the fourth quarter. The 49ers' 537 total yards of offense set a Super Bowl record.
